Why writing your product title in capitals gets it rejected

What the error means

Gratuitous capitalisation is prohibited. A title written entirely in capitals is disapproved even when everything else about the product is correct.

Why Google rejects it

Capitalised titles read as advertising rather than description, and they render badly in Shopping results.

SHOUTINGWINTER BOOTNatural caseWinter Boot
Capitals read as advertising; natural case reads as a catalogue.

How to fix it

  1. Use sentence case or title case.
  2. Keep genuine acronyms and brand names capitalised: those are fine.
  3. Check imported catalogues especially; bulk imports from suppliers often arrive fully capitalised.

A typical case

A supplier spreadsheet arrives with every title in capitals; the import maps it straight through. The store looks fine (capitals render the same to shoppers), but every imported product disapproves until the case is normalised at import time.

Common causes

Supplier data arrives in uppercase

A wholesale catalog or manufacturer spreadsheet may capitalize every character for internal consistency. If the import maps that value directly to the title, dozens of products can inherit the same style issue at once. Check whether affected items came from one source or import batch.

A title template uppercases every field

A theme app or feed transformation can apply uppercase formatting to brand, product name and variant attributes even when the saved product record uses normal case. Compare the visible title, catalog value and submitted feed title to locate the layer that changed the text.

A bulk edit changed capitalization

A spreadsheet export or mass-edit operation can transform a selected column to uppercase and sync it back to the catalog. If only recently edited items are affected, inspect the bulk operation or automation log and restore the source values before the next feed update.

Acronyms and brand styling were applied to the whole string

Some brands legitimately use capital letters in names or abbreviations such as USB, SPF or XL. The problem is applying that style across the entire title for emphasis. Preserve the genuine branded spelling and normalize the surrounding descriptive words instead of lowercasing every proper name blindly.

The Merchant Center title differs from the storefront

A feed title may be generated independently from the product page title, so changing the storefront alone leaves the submitted value unchanged. Compare exact values in Merchant Center item details and trace any title rules or supplemental source used by the feed.

Fix it on your platform

On Shopify

  1. Compare the product Title field in Shopify with the title shown in the connected Google channel or Merchant Center item details.
  2. If the product source is uppercase, edit the catalog values or correct the supplier import mapping so future syncs retain normal capitalization.
  3. If a feed app applies title formatting, disable its blanket uppercase rule and preserve only genuine brand names and acronyms as intended.
  4. Resync the affected products and check the processed title after Merchant Center updates; avoid changing theme display CSS when the feed value itself is wrong.

On WooCommerce

  1. Check the published product name and compare it with the final title in your feed plugin's preview or Merchant Center item details.
  2. Review import transforms, SEO/feed extensions and bulk editing tools for uppercase conversion rules.
  3. Normalize product names at the source while preserving brand stylization and standard abbreviations; regenerate the feed after correcting the mapping.
  4. Confirm the new feed value remains correctly cased after the next scheduled import.

On other platforms

  1. In Wix, BigCommerce, Squarespace or another catalog, inspect both the product name and the connected feed's final title field.
  2. Correct supplier spreadsheet formatting or connector rules before uploading another catalog file.
  3. For custom feeds, transform text to natural capitalization only where the original product identity supports it; preserve proper names and standard acronyms.
  4. Check a sample of updated items in Merchant Center to make sure the corrected capitalization reaches the destination.

How to confirm it is fixed

  1. Review the exact submitted title for several affected items and confirm that only genuinely capitalized names or acronyms remain all caps.
  2. Check both the catalog source and the processed Merchant Center value to identify any formatting rule that still changes the title.
  3. Run Shipwork's feed check to detect titles it identifies as entirely uppercase in the public catalog.
  4. After the next sync, review product diagnostics and confirm that a scheduled import or app has not restored uppercase formatting.

Questions

Can I use capital letters in a Google Shopping title?
Use capitalization where it is part of the real product identity, such as a brand name, acronym, country code or standard unit. Google advises against capital letters used for emphasis. A title written entirely in uppercase can look gimmicky, so use normal sentence or title capitalization for descriptive words.
Will Google reject a product title written in all caps?
Google's title guidance says not to use capital letters for emphasis and gives all-caps text as a gimmicky style to avoid. Merchant Center reports item issues in Diagnostics. Normalize the descriptive title and check whether the actual submitted value, not only the storefront styling, has changed.
Should I capitalize brand names in product titles?
Keep a brand's genuine styling when it is part of the name, and preserve conventional acronyms such as USB or SPF. The correction is not to lowercase proper names indiscriminately; it is to stop using uppercase across ordinary product words as a way to shout or draw attention.
Why is my title still uppercase in Merchant Center after I changed Shopify?
The Google feed may use an app rule, supplier source or cached product data instead of the updated Shopify title. Compare the item details in Merchant Center with the source product record, correct any import or title transformation, and wait for the next sync before checking again.
How do I change uppercase titles in bulk without losing brand spelling?
Export or edit the affected product names through your catalog's supported bulk tool, but review proper brand names, abbreviations and model codes before applying a case conversion. Fix the supplier or feed transformation too; otherwise the next import can overwrite the corrected values. Inspect a small sample in Merchant Center after syncing.
